Rhys’ Treatment Blog

Busy Day

As Rhys said in his post he’s started his treatment.

Today (Tuesday 13th) is a big day for him as he has to have a number of procedures. He’s already up and is due to get to the hospital for 7:30am. He’s on the morning list for theatre, hence the early start and hasn’t been able to eat anything since last night.

He actually did eat a meal last night which is a major step forward as he’s not been able to eat properly for weeks because he’s not been feeling up to it. Jersey new potatoes, tinned ham and tinned carrots were on the menu and he cleared his plate.

Today, Rhys has to have a blood transfusion to top up his red blood count, yesterday his haemoglobin was 9.9, his white blood count 3.6, neutrophils 1.24 and platelets a huge 172. Michelle isn’t concerned about the drop in neutrophils as they will go up and down a bit. The platelets is fantastic considering he has been at 30 and below in the last few weeks on a number of occasions, hence the platelet transfusions.

In addition to the transfusion he will be having his bone marrow harvest and also two teeth out.

As they will be giving his a general anaesthetic when they do this the doctors are taking the opportunity to insert a feeding tube up his nose and down into his stomach. The reason for doing this are so that if during treatment he finds that he doesn’t like the taste of food or the medication that he has to take orally then it can be given through the tube.

We’ve had a chat with Michelle about the transplant and what will be happening following on from that. Once I’ve deciphered the notes I have and run through the summary with Michelle I’ll post them on here.

The conditioning phase starts this Friday so we’ll be in the non-isolation part of the BMT unit for the weekend so keep Rhys in your thoughts Friday and Saturday as if he’s going to have a reaction to the drugs it will after the first dose of the conditioning drugs which will be Friday.

PPN (Post Post Note) - He’s been pushed onto the afternoon list rather than the morning one. Something to do with the Bone Marrow Harvest.
