Rhys’ Treatment Blog

T-day minus 6

Only 6 more days to go until the transplant so here is Saturday’s update.

It 16:45 and the drugs have wiped Rhys out so he’s asleep. We’ve watched Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix this afternoon. Finally. We both enjoyed it. Now we just have to figure out how we are going to get Rhys to see the Half Blood Prince when it comes out at the end of the year. When we were in London to see the Sound of Music recently Hamleys were showing a trailer for it which said there was 230 days to go until it was released. So somehow we’re going to have to think of a way for Rhys to see it when its out at the cinema. Must put my thinking cap on.

However if J K Rowling or someone from Warner Brothers is reading this and would like to organise a special showing of the film for Rhys then that would be great.

I know, its unlikely but you never know!

Anyway, here’s the treatment bit. The Cyclophosphamide is out of the way today and Rhys is onto the Mesna infusion. He’s under orders to go to the toilet every hour in order to make sure that his bladder is empty. The longer he’s on hydration and getting extra fluid the easier this should be to do. Otherwise they’ll have to give him something to make sure he goes so that the waste products resulting from the chemotherapy are flushed out of his body.

At least the doctors and nurses have been generous enough to him to allow his to go every two hours throughout the night. I’ve got 5 alarms on my watch and they are set to go off every two hours throughout the night.

If you think about it, and your old enough to have experienced it, unless your really lucky its just like being a new parent with the sleepless nights.

Tray has managed to escape to Dave and Jackie’s this weekend, she’s due back Monday evening. The good food, comfortable bed, alcohol and good company. Seems Rhys and I have the short straw here.

The BMT unit is pretty good. The staff are really friendly and so are the other parents. If it wasn’t for the illness and treatment it would be a really cushy number for Rhys. Able to stay in bed all day, food and drink when you want it and women attending to your every need. (OK, that last part really only applies to the guys and not the ladies reading this.)

Rhys has now had 3 meals in two days and has regained a bit of weight. He’s slowly working his way through the meal menu. He’s just about had a meal from each of the main meal categories. Here’s what he’s had so far: -

Beef dishes – Beef burgers

Pork dishes – Sausage Roll

Poultry dishes – Chicken Teddies

Fish dishes – Fish Fingers

Which just leaves the lamb, vegetarian, pasta and pizza sections. If he keeps on the way he’s going Rhys will manage to get through those as well so the next couple of days may see roast lamb, potato and cheese pie, macaroni cheese and cheese and tomato pizza with pepperoni.

Of we may need gas masks in this room soon if he keeps having onion rings with every meal, thank goodness he’s not eating lots of baked beans and has yet to decide to have the beef or chicken curries.

Tuesday sees the start of the clean diet so we’re going to have to do some shopping so we’ve got food and drink for him in case he stays at Sam’s and fancies him. Once he’s on the clean diet he’ll be on it for quite some time so expect to see a healthier (and slimmer?) looking Powell family in the near future.
